Street Care

Safety in Numbers (Quick Tips)

📺 Watch the Video

When you are performing street outreach to help people experiencing homelessness, it is essential to take steps to ensure your safety as well as that of those who join you.

To start off, we always recommend that you engage in this work with another person. Ask a friend, family member, colleague, or acquaintance you think might be interested in performing street outreach to come along with you.

Remember, there is safety in numbers, and you always want someone with you to back you up. At the same time, you don’t want to intimidate anyone you’re approaching, so, it is best for larger groups to divide up when they start, and then to have only one or two people engaging with any one individual.

Key Safety Tips

1. Ensure safety and go with another person.

2. Volunteer with friends or family.

3. Approach a homeless person with only two people.
