Introduction: Homelessness and Mental Illness
While you’re performing street outreach, you may have interactions with people experiencing the effects of a mental illness or mental disabilities. These individuals may have difficulty expressing themselves or have moments where they are talking to someone who is not there. In some cases, you may not notice any signs at all. It’s important to learn how to approach these individuals respectfully and in a way that ensures both their safety and yours. Unfortunately, a disproportionate amount of these individuals are on the street. Between a quarter and a third of those experiencing homelessness have a serious mental illness. When appropriate, please try to engage them.
- – Those with mental illness or disabilities don’t always show signs.
- – Don’t give up even when it can be difficult.
- – Always keep safety a priority.
