How to Approach Someone Displaying Signs of Mental Illness
πΊ Watch the Video
While you’re doing street outreach, you should introduce yourself the same way you would to anyone else. Say your name, mention that you’re a volunteer, and explain to them what you are doing there. Make it simple and straightforward, such as, “Hi, I’m Martin, and I’m volunteering today with Street Care. I’m handing out socks and water. Would you like some socks?” At this point, there is a chance that the person you are talking to is having issues with communication, possibly due to a mental disability.Β
Do your best to communicate your intentions clearly. Showing them what is in your bag can be a big help. You might want to kneel down to eye level if they are seated. Be aware that getting too close might seem threatening, so keep a respectful distance of at least six feet. Always try to offer a smile.
- – Smile, introduce yourself, but keep it simple.
- Β
- – Show the items youβre sharing as you mention them to form a visual connection.
- Β
- – Respect boundaries and keep a safe distance.
