What to Keep in Mind
When you’re out on the street trying to be helpful to those in need, you may come across veterans. Keep in mind how we have all benefited from these individuals putting themselves in harm’s way.Β
In such cases, it is very important for you to pay special attention and gain some insight into how they could be feeling, and what they might have gone through β and be going through. After you’ve taken a moment to consider these things, approach them and start an interaction.
Some homeless veterans may be suffering from various levels and types of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. They may have lost those they most love or care about. In such cases, you want to be both cautious and kind at the same time. When approaching, be mindful and thoughtful of how you speak and then gently offer assistance.
– Keep in mind unique circumstances veterans go through (PTSD, losing loved ones, etc.)
– Approach with kindness, respect, and empathy
– Be thoughtful and listen attentively.
