Don’t Make Assumptions (Quick Tips)
The most important thing to remember is to never make assumptions. We all have biased ideas and perceptions in our minds about what mental illness or disability looks like, whether consciously or subconsciously.
Th truth is, you can never be entirely sure of a person’s state of mental health. Anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and many other conditions manifest themselves differently.
People on the street typically lack privacy, so you may be seeing someone reacting to a difficult situation or moment. With these things in mind, we encourage you to be mindful of any assumptions you may be making and to push yourself to work against these biases.
- – Don’t assume. Consider the individual and their situation.
- – Signs and symptoms manifest differently.
- – Be mindful and respectful at all times.
